Affordable All-ceramic cosmetic dental crowns

What are dental crowns?

Dental crowns are used to strengthen, enlarge and restore native teeth and their roots to their full functionality and appearance. A tooth crown, also referred to as a cap, is custom made to fit over a tooth which has been prepared by the dentist. Dental crowns can reshape or enlarge severely damaged teeth, and it is also possible to reposition or correct crooked teeth to a great extent.

Advantages

The major advantage of crowns is that they are almost identical to your natural teeth.
They have very similar physical attributes to natural teeth, and when all-ceramic materials are used they have a natural translucence.

Disadvantages

In general, the drawbacks of conventional crowns supported by native teeth are that the teeth must be shaped or ground down so that they can serve as pillars. Furthermore the structure may overload the supporting teeth.

What are they made of?

Crowns can be made from different kinds of materials. In the past the most frequently used material was metal. Nowadays more attention is paid to the crown’s aesthetic and biological characteristics: PORCELAIN CROWNS FUSED TO METAL are being replaced with zirconium-based all-ceramic dental crowns.
Ceramic materials are also hypoallergenic and unlike crowns with a metal core they do not corrode: as a result they do not leach any substances. All-ceramic materials with zirconium do not suffer from the electro-galvanic interaction that occurs between metals and the human body.

The preparation of crowns

The preparation of dental crowns requires a few days but the exact length of the procedure is subject to the volume of work and the chosen material.

On the first day the teeth that will serve as pillars are prepared. Preparation involves reshaping these teeth in order to allow room for the crowns to be placed over them. Impressions are taken on the first day to allow the dental technicians to start as soon as possible. Meanwhile, temporary teeth are made for you by the dentist to protect the prepared teeth until you receive your permanent crown.

Before the final crown is ready, the fit of the frame or the model is checked rigorously during various stages of the procedure. After necessary small adjustments are made, the crown is fitted permanently. Articulation comes last, during which the dentist makes sure that the surfaces of the teeth are correctly adjusted to one another; and that the bite is perfect and even. The multiple checks during the procedure are designed to verify the fitting of the crown and to check the biting position. They also permit discussion of the aesthetic aspects with the patient and the laboratory in order to achieve the optimal result by taking the patient’s opinion into consideration.
